Waitarere Charity Trail Ride

Waitarere Charity Trail Ride, May 24th, 2009.

On Sunday, 534 motorcyclists braved the cold wind and overcast skies to take part in a Charity Trail Ride organized by the Horowhenua Motorcycle Club to raise money for the upkeep of the Poroutawhao School Hall. A paddock behind the Lewis Farms, Asparagus pack house just North of the Waitarere Beach turn off became a car park.
>From there the riders went on a long meandering loop around the local Waitarere farm land between State Highway One and the sea covering farmland, farm tracks, an interesting section of swamp and a cattle underpass. By utilizing Easton’s cattle underpass the riders where able to cover some ground South of Waitarere Beach Road in the morning before returning to the car park for lunch.
After lunch the second part of the ride was another big loop around the local farmland and pine plantations. Despite the recent rain the ground was firm and apart from a couple of sections of track and the swamp, it was relatively easy going. Even though it looked like it was snowing up in the Tararua ranges all day, the riders had no rain, just a rather cold Southerly wind to contend with.
Exploring, exercising, raising money for charity and having fun all at once, a great day out for all those on the Waitarere Charity Trail Ride.
As a photographer I quite liked the swamp section, although I suspect the riders who had to get towed out by the Horowhenua Motorcycle Club’s traveling Marshall’s, may have had other thoughts about this section.

Both paintings by artist Billy (David Bill) took him about three months to paint (Billy averages 1 inch an hour on the detail parts!) and are celebrations of the two motorcycle marques. ‘Triumph 100 Years’ shows the men and machines who make the amazing Triumph bikes. Billy the artist is on the painting too riding the Speed Triple in the centre flanked by the Bonneville T100 and Centenary Daytona. The other bikes from 2002 are in monochrome Red and the men who make the bikes are in blue all based on the Union Flag.

‘Decade of Domination’ is a celebration of Ducati’s rise to world prominance in World Superbikes in the 1990′s. It shows, based on the Italian flag, all the world champions from that decade that took Ducati from a small struggling factory to a dominant force in WSBKs and motorcycling. Raymond Roche, Doug Polen and Troy Corser are in monochrome colour with Carl Fogarty’s 4 World Superbike Championship victories in full colour.

You can view the incredible detail that Billy puts in his work on his website www.billyart.co.uk and there is a link from the front page to both the Triumph and Ducati paintings. ?There is also a 96 second youtube video in which Billy explains this amazing offer to win one of these stunning paintings?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9a8-BAYQMY Each edition is of 1000, 51x71cm, signed and numbered with free worldwide shipping for 45 (approx $110) each print. Not long after Billy completed the paintings his family suffered a lot of illness which had him shelve the prints for a few years while caring for them. Billy has other work in the collections of Aston Martin Cars, Rivera Amplifiers and the BBC among others.

There is also a sketchbook from a cruise I was on last year on my website around New Zealand among my other portfolios.
