New Zealand’s Motorcycle Heritage

New Zealand’s Motorcycle Heritage, Book Three: 1960s to 2008.
By Maureen A. Bull

A book review by Steve Green

The name Maureen Bull is one that is well know in Classic Motorcycle circles for her two previous books on New Zealand’s rich motorcycle history. Now her long awaited third book is at the Printers and will be available from Steve Green Enterprises shortly.
Currently I have a preproduction version of the book on my desk and get to read it before the book is even back from the Printers. The new book covers the era from the 1960′s through to the end of 2008 and includes short articles and photos on a combination of machines as well as riders. The book covers such historic machines as Dick Huurdeman’s 350cc Manx Norton Special “Bucephalus”, the iconic Kiwi made Mountain Goat, the Black Adder Harley Davidson, and Don Lowe’s amazing BSA MC1 Prototype replica.
Historic riders also get a mention, including Hugh Anderson, Graeme Crosby, Howard Gregory, Robert Holden, Ben Townley, Aaron Slight and the legendary Burt Munro.
The book even covers the other end of the scale with everyday machines that normally would not get a second glance like the humble LE Velocette and the Ariel Arrow. Mainstream bikes from the era are also covered like the Yamaha XS1100, Suzuki GS1000S, Honda GL1000 Gold Wing, Triumph T140 Bonneville, Kawasaki Voyager and the Yamaha YZ250F.
The book is 236 pages long with plenty of colour images including some of my own, with a soft cardboard cover, 190mm x 250mm.
There are around 100 articles in the book making for some very interesting reading, especially with the historical nature of the bikes and the personal input from the bike’s owners. The articles include some unusual photos, facts and information not previously published. This very diversity and depth of information will make it appealing to a wide range of motorcyclists as well as the general public.
The books will be available at the upcoming Vintage Car Club Show in Levin on March 7th or can be ordered for $60 from www.workshopmanuals.co.nz

NZCMRR Classic Festival Pukekohe 2009

NZCMRR Classic Festival Pukekohe 2009.   PHOTOS
By Steve Green

The 30th Annual New Zealand Classic Motorcycle Racing meeting at Pukekohe got underway on a warm Friday morning in early February. The pits were already packed for what was the official practice day. A walk around the pits revealed an impressive line up of bikes from old vintage machines with rigid rear ends and girder forks through to unique classic racers from days gone by. Top of the list was the 4 cylinder, 2 stroke racer of the late Kim Newcombe. The Konig engine has a single, twin throat carburettor feeding down into the crank cases of the Boxer engine, which has two cylinders laid flat pointing forward and two pointing to the rear. Draggin Jeans

Over the last 10 years Draggin Jeans have continuously invested in product research and development to ensure riders have the best.

One outcome of that research is the discovery of Dyneema®, the World’s Strongest Fiber™. Draggin Jeans are proud to announce the arrival of this revolutionary fibre which is now used in the lining of every pair of Draggin Jeans. This ‘Unobtainium’ combination of Kevlar and Dyneema® used in Draggin Jeans lining is breakthrough technology for casual motorcycle clothing such as jeans and provides double the strength of Kevlar alone.

Draggin Jeans are the only casual motorcycle clothing to have the added strength of Dyneema®.

The addition of Dyneema® to Draggin Jeans lining has resulted in Draggin Jeans passing the CE level one abrasion resistance (gravel rash) test for general highway and freeway riding.

Draggin Jeans are the only motorcycle jeans in the world to pass this CE test lasting an average of 4.4 seconds. Draggin Jeans have also passed CE burst and tear tests.

As an Australian company, Draggin Jeans are very proud to have achieved this level of safety and remain the best.

Draggin Jeans promise is to always do what’s best for motorcycle riders. This is BIG news for the motorcycling industry so please feel free to pass it on.

Ride Safe from Draggin Jeans.
